First Minutes Matter Program

Be the difference in critical moments. Learn life-saving skills today.

Every minute counts in a medical emergency. The StarFlight First Minutes Matter program empowers everyday people with the confidence, skills, and knowledge to act when seconds matter most.

First Minutes Matter creates a powerful social impact by bringing communities together to educate, prepare, and equip individuals with emergency life-saving skills. Survival starts on the ground, and whether in rural farming communities or regional centres, the more people trained to respond in emergencies, the stronger and more resilient the community becomes during challenging times.

Why First Minutes Matter

In emergencies like road accident trauma, heart attacks, or serious accidents, the first few minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

Each individual trained in emergency trauma response plays a crucial role in increasing survival chances and reducing the likelihood of long-term health consequences, ultimately fostering a safer, more supportive environment for everyone.

Road safety urgency

Tasmania is facing a growing road safety crisis. In April 2025, Tasmania recorded its highest monthly road toll since 2009, with eleven people killed and ten seriously injured on the State’s roads. So far this year, 20 lives have already been lost.

Accidents happen quickly, and emergency responders cannot always be there immediately. The first minutes after a crash are critical—and that’s where trained community members make the difference. Starflight FMM equips you with the skills to respond effectively, reduce harm, and save lives.

Who should attend

The FMM program is designed for everyone:

  • People who care for the community and
  • Parents and caregivers

“You’ve got no idea what you’ll come across in your day-to-day life, so you might be the reason why someone actually survives if they ever suffer some type of traumatic incident."

Zach's story

Zach’s right leg was amputated when he came off a motorcycle on 16 December 2017. Dozens of medical professionals kept him alive, but it was the quick thinking of the first two people by his side that saved him. Zach has shared his rescue story across Queensland and is a motivational speaker.

He’s also an advocate for First Minutes Matter, as he knows first-hand how learning the skills taught in these workshops could help save someone’s life after a traumatic incident.
